One of the most common questions we hear is simple: manual or power wheelchair? There’s no single right answer — it depends on strength, lifestyle, and how much support you need day to day. Here’s how to think it through.
When a manual wheelchair makes sense
Manual wheelchairs are lighter, more portable, and generally more affordable. They’re a strong choice if you have enough upper-body strength to self-propel, or if a caregiver will be pushing the chair regularly. They also fold more easily into most car boots, which matters if you’re frequently on the move around the UAE.
When a power wheelchair makes more sense
If self-propelling is tiring, painful, or simply not possible, a power wheelchair gives back independence that a manual chair can’t. Power chairs are also worth considering for anyone covering longer distances regularly, or navigating outdoor terrain where manual propulsion becomes physically demanding.
The middle ground: power add-ons
Not everyone needs to choose one or the other outright. Power-assist add-ons can convert an existing manual wheelchair into a power-assisted one — useful for people who want the lightness and familiarity of their current chair, but need extra support for longer distances, inclines, or tiring days.
Questions worth asking yourself
- How far do I typically need to travel in a day?
- Will I be self-propelling, or will someone assist me most of the time?
- Do I need to fold and transport the chair frequently — in a car, for travel, or between rooms?
- Is fatigue or strength a growing concern, even if it isn’t today?
There’s no wrong starting point
Many of our customers start with a manual chair and later add power-assist, or move to a full power wheelchair as their needs change. The most important step isn’t picking the “perfect” chair on the first try — it’s working with someone who can reassess and adjust as your needs evolve.
